“A homeless girl in a drift” poem

Writer: Kelly Alexandra HoffKelly Alexandra Hoff

“The soundtrack of summer played

As I scanned the river with my eyes

Behind a camera of glass

The old soul behind

With hands

Cut, wounded, dirty

A homeless girl in a drift

A homeless girl in a drift

A homeless girl in a drift

No home with shelter above

Sleepless nights

Too frightened to touch

The men who might have wanted me

I hid behind my suitcase

A black boy carried my guitar

He kissed my stomach

Wanted more I’m sure

We walked through the tunnel

To the riverside homeless shelter

Standing on the corners in the morn

After bag lunch and coffee

Begging for cash

Accepting water and food

From the passers by

In their cars..

In their cars..

In their cars..

Black boy returns

He always knows where to find me

He holds me from behind

As if I’m carrying his child

Stunning eyes

I know I have

Love and love and love

A homeless girl in a drift

A homeless girl in a drift

A homeless girl in a drift

A homeless girl in a drift

A homeless girl adrift.”
